ABOUT WESTMINSTER FILM SOCIETY
In June 2019, Livan Garcia-Duquesne & Asena Oyzoyn were elected Co-Presidents of the Westminster Film Society for the year 2019-2020 within the University of Westminster. The crux of their ambitious programme was to rebrand the Film Society into a living institution for cinema in London, where students, and anyone interested, could participate in free cinema screenings and events in the School of Art's Auditorium, which was equipped to host professional cinema screenings. By programming monthly seasons with specific themes or aspects of film history/ theory, and by creating elaborate marketing campaigns, including the printing and distribution of pamphlets, the committee was aiming to re-energise and re-vitalise the Society, while also offering a diverse canon of films projected in order to represent the entire student body. For example, one season was entitled ‘Beyond Borders’, for which the Society screened, among others, Ousmane Sembène’s Black Girl, and Fatih Akin’s Head On. In the midst of the Covid pandemic, the Westminster Film Society also organised the 2020 Westminster Film Festival which received an extensive number of submissions.
